Within a short period of time the ESS energy solution, the basis for the process to make ESS the first sustainable research facility, has been presented to members of the Swedish Riksdag as well as the European Parliament.

At a breakfast meeting on 9th November the members of the Swedish Riksdag, learned how the facility will be powered by electricity from renewable sources, how the heat generated in the facility will be recycled and used in the district heating system, and by using these methods will save money and reduce CO2 emissions.

– When building the facility in an environmentally sustainable way we save up to 150 million SEK every year, says Thomas Parker, ESS Energy Manager. Moreover we reduce CO2 emissions by 165 000 tons every year, equivalent to 5.5 million round trips Paris to New York, after 40 years operation.

Mats Didriksson, Development Manager at Lunds Energikoncernen, reported that the excess heat will be recycled and used for heating offices and residential homes in Lund and Eslöv.

- The heat that is generated in the facility can be used to heat up to 10 000 houses in the Lund area.

- Which sources for electricity production that will be used have not been decided yet, says Richard Bengtsson, Project Manager at E.ON, the third party in the co-operation. We are currently exploring the possibility of using wind power, but biofuel could be an option. It has been decided that the production of electricity should be sustainable, both environmentally and long term.

The ESS energy solution has been developed in co-operation with E.ON and Lunds Energikoncernen. The final report on how the solution will be implemented will be presented in the beginning of 2013.
