The European Spallation Source Programme is growing fast and today welcomes the 100th employee in the new Headquarter building.

100_ESS_employeeESS will be the world-leading science facility for materials and life science research with neutrons. The ESS Programme is now in a design and build-up phase, with a fast growing and expanding organisation. This Monday, the ESS staff has moved into the new Headquarters in Medicon Village.

As a sign of the expanding programme, ESS today reaches one hundred employees. In fact, employee number one hundred are two: procurement officer Tom Hadfield and RF systems engineer Anders Sunesson, who both start working at ESS today.

- Having led the ESS project from 2007, when we were four persons in one room, I am particularly proud over the number of highly skilled staff from all over the world, which we have recruited. Our employees and their expertise is, by far, the most valuable resource we have, says Colin Carlile, ESS Director-General.

Now that ESS has moved its Headquarter to a new location in Lund, it is time to change all phone numbers.

To reach the ESS switch board you call +46 46 888 30 00. All direct numbers to the ESS staff can be found here.

Since Monday ESS has a new visiting address: Tunavägen 24, Building 205. It is located on the Medicon Village area. A map for Medicon Village can also be found here.

new_office_logoThis morning the ESS staff in Lund moved into the new ESS headquarter at Medicon Village in Lund. Situated closer to the future construction site with more office space and other more suitable facilities , this is yet another milestone in the planning and construction of the next generation neutron source.

The organisation has literally grown out of the old building. When moving in at St Algatan four years ago, two people was on the pay roll. Now, more than 100 staff is movin out

- It is with mixed feelings we move to the new offices, says Colin Carlile, Director General. The old Headquarter was in the middle of Lunds beautiful historical city centre.

The new Headquarter will give ESS the possibility to gather its staff in Lund under one roof, with enough space for the engineers and scientists being recruited the coming years.

The new address is Tunavägen 24 in Lund. A map and travel instructions will soon be published here. The public exhibition will stay at St Algatan yet some time.

The European Spallation Source, MAXIV Laboratory and the Department of Physics at Lund University start the first joint laboratory. The new laboratory is the first step towards the building-up of joint infrastructure in the future Science City to be located between MAXIV and ESS.

The Joint Detector Laboratory will be the first facility shared by ESS, MAXIV and Lund University. In the laboratory, novel types of detectors suitable for the future ESS and MAXIV facilities will be developed.

ESS and MAXIV will be complementary research facilities. In order to fully make use of the potential scientific synergies of these two leading research facilities, initiatives are being taken to strengthen the scientific exchange between MAXIV, ESS and Lund University.  The development of joint infrastructures, such as joint laboratories, is one part of this.

symposiaToday the second call for proposals in the ESS Science Symposia series was announced. Deadline for application is 31 January 2012.

The documents for guidelines and call for proposals can be downloaded here.

So far nine symposia have been funded by ESS.

The workshops should discuss a specific community’s requirements for neutron scattering instrumentation as well as supporting facilities, laboratories and sample environments. It is encouraged that Symposia focus around scientific themes or areas as opposed to types of instrumentation or particular techniques.

The ESS Science Symposia present an important opportunity to have a direct say into the planning and construction of ESS and its science. The outcome of these workshops in the form of a report will be presented directly to the Science Advisory Council of ESS. and will have influence over the research landscape at ESS.
