Answer

A neutron is a particle without an electric charge. They are commonly found in atomic nuclei together with protons, positively charged particles. They can be knocked off from the atomic nuclei with the help of protons in order to create free neutrons. This is called spallation. Apart from neutrons, by-products such as radioactive material and ionising radiation are created in the spallation process.
