Will ESS create growth and employment opportunities?

Answer

Research centres such as ESS have a considerable strategic significance for research and growth.
ESS is expected to create employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly. The construction of the facility will generate employment for thousands of people, and around 400 researchers and technicians will need to be employed in order to operate the facility. More jobs can be created indirectly.
A research facility such as ESS also leads to a series of high-tech spin-off establishments. These can partly be companies that work with technology closely linked to ESS’s scientific instruments or to the operation of ESS, and partly companies that wish to benefit from the research opportunities available at ESS. Some companies can become interested in starting research centres in connection to ESS. Companies dealing with pharmaceuticals and biotechnology can be given the chance to establish individual research stations at ESS, just like Astra Zeneca has at the MAX-Lab today.
