Answer
ESS Scandinavia has made detailed cost calculations as to how much it will cost to build ESS in Lund. In line with 2007/2008 prices, the combined cost of construction is estimated to be 1.48 billion euros, including site-specific costs such as land and land planning. In order to guarantee that the calculations are realistic, they have been benchmarked against SNS and J-PARC.
This does not mean that ESS is more expensive than what has been indicated in previous calculations. The previous calculation of 1.2 billion euros was in line with year 2000 prices. What is more, ESS Scandinavia has now calculated the total investment cost, which includes the equipment planned to be completed during the years after the ESS facility can be put into operation. The new cost calculations therefore include more equipment than the previous calculations.
The investment period is estimated to last approximately 10 years. A couple of years are required for detail projection and approximately eight years for facility and equipment work. The main part will be invested during the latter stages of the ten year period.
When the facility is put into operation, the yearly operational costs will amount to approximately 900 million Swedish kronor or 100 million euros. In addition to this, there is a reserve of approximately 170 million euros (1.5-1.6 billion Swedish kronor) for future dismantling.
