The European Spallation Source, MAXIV Laboratory and the Department of Physics at Lund University start the first joint laboratory. The new laboratory is the first step towards the building-up of joint infrastructure in the future Science City to be located between MAXIV and ESS.

The Joint Detector Laboratory will be the first facility shared by ESS, MAXIV and Lund University. In the laboratory, novel types of detectors suitable for the future ESS and MAXIV facilities will be developed.
ESS and MAXIV will be complementary research facilities. In order to fully make use of the potential scientific synergies of these two leading research facilities, initiatives are being taken to strengthen the scientific exchange between MAXIV, ESS and Lund University. The development of joint infrastructures, such as joint laboratories, is one part of this.

Today the second call for proposals in the ESS Science Symposia series was announced. Deadline for application is 31 January 2012.
The documents for guidelines and call for proposals can be downloaded here.
So far nine symposia have been funded by ESS.
The workshops should discuss a specific community’s requirements for neutron scattering instrumentation as well as supporting facilities, laboratories and sample environments. It is encouraged that Symposia focus around scientific themes or areas as opposed to types of instrumentation or particular techniques.
The ESS Science Symposia present an important opportunity to have a direct say into the planning and construction of ESS and its science. The outcome of these workshops in the form of a report will be presented directly to the Science Advisory Council of ESS. and will have influence over the research landscape at ESS.

Within a short period of time the ESS energy solution, the basis for the process to make ESS the first sustainable research facility, has been presented to members of the Swedish Riksdag as well as the European Parliament.
At a breakfast meeting on 9th November the members of the Swedish Riksdag, learned how the facility will be powered by electricity from renewable sources, how the heat generated in the facility will be recycled and used in the district heating system, and by using these methods will save money and reduce CO2 emissions.

How do we promote Materials Science? That is a question asked by Joerg Heber after a visit at The European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden. Joerg met with Science Director Dimitri Argyriou and wrote this on his blog All that matters:
"The study of materials is one of the major areas of science, with legions of researchers in physics, chemistry and materials science working on this topic. Condensed matter physics is one of the largest research areas in physics. Yet, it makes me often uneasy how the benefits of materials science are promoted. It is all too often about applications, and not about fundamental physics.
(...)
Last week I visited the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, which is currently under construction. From 2019 onwards the ESS will use neutron beams to study various properties of materials. And I’ve discussed with ESS’s science director Dimitry Argyriou how to promote such a facility. Of course, the materials research done at the ESS will hugely benefit all the important applications that I mentioned above, and more. And for this reason alone the costs of the ESS (1.5 billion Euro, if not a little more) seem justified."

How can neutron scattering help to make wine tastier, to extend the shelf life time of food by improved packaging, improve the recipe for fresh cheeses, fight obesity or make the crust of bread ever more crispy?
If you want to know more or if you have any ideas, please participate in the workshop Neutrons and Food to be held 29 January – 1 February 2012 in Delft.
More information can be found at neutronfood.tudelft.nl.
The deadline for abstracts is 8 December 2011.
